Earth Days 2014 at Salem State

What Does It Mean To Be Green?

The theme of this year’s Earth Day celebration at Salem State University is “What does it mean to be green?”

The use of the term “green” has proliferated in the United States and globally. The media use it. Corporations use it. Cities, towns and campuses are designated “green.” But, what does it really mean? The term ‘green-washing’ has been coined to suggest a form of ‘white-washing’, where green is more about publicity than practices. How do we spot green-washing? Why is it a problem? What would it mean to be certified as “green”? What would a greenness index look like? Earth Days Week 2014 will explore the multiple dimensions and definitions of greenness in the economy, politics, technology, agriculture, energy, eating and jobs. We will examine what it means to be green as individuals and as a community.

The Earth Day Planning Committee invites you to participate in this year’s Earth Days events to learn, contemplate, discuss and share strategies and actions that we can take on-campus, in our communities, nationwide, and globally to be ‘greener’. This week will provide a catalyst to envision a green future for Salem State University.
