Hi! My name is Michelle Roy and I am a Geography student at Salem State College majoring in Cartography and GIS. This web page was created in an attempt to incorporate information about the Austral realm with current remote sensing technology to fulfill requirements for my World Regions geography class and my Remote Sensing class. Remote sensing can be basically defined as obtaining information about an area or object without actually coming into contact with it. Our own eyes can be defined as remote sensors as well as satellites, photographs and many other imaging tools. The science of remote sensing can be used to image objects from space, air, or distant locations when on-site inspection is impractical or the object being sensed is invisible to the naked eye. Some applications of remote sensing include imaging the Earth's surface (see above), environmental monitoring, military intelligence, weather prediction and much more. Through the use of remote sensing sensing programs scientists have been able to study deforestation of the rainforest, monitor natural disasters, and gauge the effects of pollution on environments. For more information on what remote sensing is click here. The Austral realm includes Australia, New Zealand, and the surrounding oceans. Despite its size, the Austral realm is an isolated region due to its relative position in the world. There are currently numerous programs utilizing remote sensing in this realm for such basics as weather forecasting and mapping applications to more advanced areas , of interest such as coastal monitoring and forestry management. Within this website are pages with information on currents Austral remote sensing programs, images of the realm collected from various satellites and studies, background information on Australia and New Zealand, and links to more websites related to these areas.
