GPH282 Global Environmental Issues - May, 2012
The university includes sustainable efforts with every renovation
project. These efforts include the use of environmentally-friendly
products, energy efficient lighting fixtures, water metering toilets
and sinks, installation of energy efficient heating and cooling
equipment connected to the campus energy management system,
and connection of heating equipment to multiple fuel sources.
The new library on north campus is in the process of being labeled as a
LEED Gold standard, (again in excess of the LEED Plus requirement).
The building has been designed to accommodate a geothermal system
in the future, has a rainwater detention system, uses many locally
grown or manufactured building components, and will use LED lighting
in many parts of the building.
Marsh Hall was the first new
construction project to be commissioned
on campus as a LEED-Silver certified
building, exceeding the state's minimum
LEED Plus requirement. Marsh Hall's
design includes:
|- green roofs
|- a wire mesh gabion wall for
rainwater recharge
|-energy efficient lighting
|-programmable thermostats and
motion sensors or timing devices
|-energy management systems
|-indigenous plantings as part of
the landscaping effort
|-energy efficient heating and
cooling systems
|- Energy Star rated appliances to
name a few features.
